AIDS 3 / West Africa Project to Combat AIDS and STIs (WAPCAS)
(2001-2006)

Intervention (themes) and Responsibility

The AIDS 3 Project, coordinated by the CCISD, is divided into five major thematic strategies, directing strategies and interventions of nine National Support Teams (under joint management of the CCISD and its partners). The Project’s responsibilities are divided as follows:

  • the Centre hospitalier affilié universitaire de Québec (CHA) is in charge of:

    • STI control strategies and essential anti-STI drug management

    • follow up/monitoring programs and research aimed at measuring and assessing progress

  • the CCISD is in charge of:

    • the Community Participation Support Team (in collaboration with Université Laval’s nursing faculty). This Support Team will contribute to the set up of preventive programs focused on raising awareness in order to induce changes in social interactions and behaviors among vulnerable populations in high-risk environments.

    • the Gender and Development Strategy, applied through all Project staff at all levels, contributes to the empowerment of women and calls into question factors partaking in the development of inequalities in men/women relationships. The GAD strategy is managed in collaboration with Université Laval’s department of social and preventive medicine

    • advocacy, communication and visibility strategies. The CCISD puts forward information sessions to make the Project, its results and lessons, known to CIDA strategy developers and decision-makers, the Canadian public, members of the international scientific community, and field collaborators.
