Project Support the Fight against AIDS among Commercial Sex Workers in Burkina Faso (PAPSIDA)
In its capacity as advisor to the Multisectoral AIDS
Program’s Support Project, the CCISD is providing preventive
and curative services to commercial sex workers (CSWs) and
their clients, as well as to women and young girls who live
in environments where socio-sexual network organizations are
likely to contribute to the spread of the infection. In
keeping with national guidelines on HIV/AIDS response, the
project reinforces STI diagnosis and treatment capabilities,
and provides, according to a cost-recovery policy, essential
anti-STI drugs to health care facilities. Technical
training/supervision and financial aid are provided to
relevant, locally-renowned community-based organizations
(associations, NGOs and, in some cases, national
institutions) that sign joint venture agreements in the
shape of micro-projects. Gender mainstreaming is also an
integral part of the project.
Baseline from the 2001 Behavioural Surveillance Survey (BSS
2001) —which took place in Ouagadougou, Bobo-Dioulasso,
Ouahigouya, Tenkodogo, and Gaoua (amongst others)— is used
to measure the impact of:
1. Improving availability and accessibility of healthcare
services specifically adapted to deal with CSW sexually
transmitted infections (STIs).
2. Promoting CSW empowerment at the social and community
level by supporting advocacy and social mobilization
initiatives they undertake, their organization into groups
or associations, and the improvement of their relationships
with their clients and with men in general (particularly in
regards to health and sexuality issues).
3. Increasing the availability and accessibility of condoms
(both male and female) and of lubricating gels, to help
prevent STIs/HIV/AIDS in sex workers and in commercial sex
environments.
4. Increasing CSW level of knowledge regarding STI/HIV/AIDS
transmission, prevention, and control methods in the target
areas.
This is a two-year advisory project (June 2004 – May 2006).
Year 1 will target the towns of Bitou, Koupéla, Pô, Banfora,
and Niangoloko; and Year 2 will target Koudougou, Fada
N’Gourma, Boromo, Pa, Faramana, Fo, Kantchari, and Léo.
