Establishment of an oncology unit at the Norman Bethune University, in Changchun, China
(begun in 1990)
With
a grant from the Association of Universities and Colleges
of Canada (AUCC) and the Canadian International Development
Agency (CIDA), this project involved planning and setting
up an oncology unit in the city of Changchun. Reaching the
goal required training doctors, nurses and epidemiologists,
the creation of a register for tumors and establishment
of a clinical research centre in epidemiology.
The
oncology unit is now located in facilities provided by authorities
from the Norman Bethune University. Its pertinence and excellence
are widely acknowledged throughout China.
Project managers have begun a second phase. The sharing
of oncology activities will encourage the exchange of information
among four major establishments and make it possible to
establish a university research network that will provide
major benefits to universities in both Canada and China.
It
should be noted that this project is a tangible example
of how CCISD contributes to a mandate as a management specialist.
Coordination of the oncology unit is under the responsibility
of the Surgery Department of the Laval University Medical
School.
