The CCISD - Pierre Viens Award in support of health facilities in Nepal, India and Mali

The CCISD - Pierre Viens Award, launched in 2016, has just concluded its 5th and final edition. The objective of this award is to support health institutions that welcome students from the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Nursing of Université Laval for international and intercultural internships.

For the 2020 edition, the selection criteria have been modified in order to help partner organizations whose activities have been affected by the international health situation. CCISD has thus awarded two $10,000 prizes to support organizations in their response to COVID-19, or in the revival or maintenance of certain health services that have been cut back due to the pandemic.

Exceptionally this year, the Fonds de la Faculté de médecine en santé internationale (FEMSI) and Sciences infirmières autour du monde (SIAM), the student funds that finance the international internships of the two faculties, contributed to the project in order to offer a 3rd prize. FEMSI contributed $5,000, SIAM contributed $2,000 and CCISD added $3,000 for a total of $10,000.

The organisations that were awarded one of the two CCISD prizes are

  • Ear Care Nepal for the project Promoting Hearing Health of Nepalese Children during the Health Crisis
  • Kalkeri Sangeet Vidyalaya (India), for the project Reconstruction of the Kalkeri Sangeet Vidyalaya infirmary to optimise health care for young people and local communities.
  • The third prize offered by FEMSI and SIAM, in collaboration with CCSID, was awarded to the Organisation for Health Promotion and Community Development (OPSDC) for the project Together against COVID-19 among sex workers (SWs) in Cotonou.

A jury including Jacques Girard, Director of Global Health in the Faculty of Medicine, Anne Guichard, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Nursing, and Robert Beaudry, Executive Director of CCISD, selected the winning organizations for the two prizes offered by CCISD. The Student Fund Prize in collaboration with CCISD was awarded by a committee composed of members of FEMSI and SIAM.

The CCISD - Pierre Viens Award recognizes the contribution of partner organizations in Africa and Asia to the training of students participating in the international and intercultural internship and to support them in projects aimed at improving the health of the populations they serve.
